About

From Surviving to Helping Others Find Steadiness

My path to this work has not been a straight or easy one. I experienced homelessness as a teenager and again as a young mother. Substance use, trauma, and crisis have touched many generations of my family, and I have also walked my own path of recovery for more than 35 years.

I know what it is like to be the person struggling, and I know what it is like to love someone whose life is being affected by addiction and homelessness. Those experiences did not disqualify me from helping others.

They taught me how deeply people need compassion, dignity, and support without judgment.

Today, as a Certified MAP Method™ Practitioner, trauma-informed coach, and U.S. Navy veteran, I help people calm their nervous systems, loosen the grip of painful patterns, and reconnect with the possibility of a more relaxed and joyful life.

Why This Work Matters to Me

My name is Kathy Donaldson, and I founded Relaxed & Joyful Living because I believe people deserve support that honors both what they have survived and who they are becoming.

I understand crisis from more than one side. I have experienced instability and recovery in my own life, and I have also loved family members affected by substance use, homelessness, and other painful challenges. I know how easily fear, guilt, exhaustion, and responsibility can take over when someone you love is struggling.

This lived experience is part of what inspired Something’s Shattered, a compassionate support circle for family members and close supporters of someone in crisis. It is also why dignity, emotional safety, and freedom from judgment are at the heart of all my work.

Whether I am supporting someone individually, facilitating a MAP group, or sitting beside a family member who feels overwhelmed, my purpose is the same: to help people find steadiness, reconnect with themselves, and remember that healing and possibility are still available.

My Approach

My approach brings together professional training, trauma-informed care, nervous-system awareness, and the understanding that comes from lived experience. I offer a calm, respectful space where you remain in control of your participation, your story, and the pace of our work.

As a Certified MAP Method™ Practitioner, I use a gentle process that works with the superconscious mind to help identify and release emotional patterns that may be keeping the nervous system on alert. You do not need to describe every detail or relive painful experiences for meaningful change to occur.

My background as a software developer and project manager also shaped the way I work. I naturally notice patterns, make complicated things easier to understand, and help people move through an experience one manageable step at a time.

Whether we are working individually or in a group, you are never treated as broken or as a problem to be fixed. We begin with the understanding that your responses developed for a reason, and that greater steadiness, freedom, and possibility can emerge when your whole system feels supported.

This work may be a good fit for you if you:

• Feel anxious, overwhelmed, emotionally stuck, or constantly on alert
• Understand intellectually that you are safe, but your body does not seem to believe it
• Carry painful patterns, beliefs, or experiences you are ready to loosen
• Want support without having to retell or relive every detail of the past
• Love someone affected by addiction, homelessness, mental health challenges, or another serious crisis
• Are exhausted from caring for others and want to reconnect with your own needs
• Are looking for gentle, respectful support that honors your dignity, choices, and pace

You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out. You only need a willingness to explore what greater steadiness and freedom might feel like for you.

What You Can Expect

Sessions are collaborative, respectful, and paced to your comfort level. You remain aware and in control throughout the process. My role is to guide - not push - and to create a space where your nervous system can experience something different.

Change often feels subtle at first: more space between trigger and reaction, a quieter mind, a deeper sense of ease. Over time, those shifts can add up to meaningful relief.

Next Steps

You do not have to know exactly what kind of support you need before reaching out. You may begin with an individual MAP session, explore an online group, or learn more about Something’s Shattered and local support opportunities. Choose the path that feels most supportive right now.
